The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is an autonomous body under the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways. It is responsible for the development, maintenance, and management of national highways entrusted to it by the Government of India. The network it handles spans over 92,000 km of national highways—critical infrastructure for India's connectivity and economy.
NHAI was established under the National Highways Authority of India Act, 1988, and began operations in February 1995. It operates under the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways, with ownership and oversight administered by the Government of India.
NHAI's structure comprises a three-tier system: Headquarters at New Delhi, Regional Offices across states, and localized Project Implementation Units (PIUs) with Project Directors.
A 21.65 km, six-lane elevated expressway in Haryana, fully opened in July 2022. Cost: ₹1,466 crore.
A 6.8 km bypass in Kerala, part of NH-66, running along the beach. Jointly built by central and state governments; inaugurated in 2021.
A newly completed expressway link featuring slip lanes and cloverleaf ramps to streamline traffic between Delhi and Jaipur.
Includes flyovers, underpasses, and upcoming escalator-equipped foot overbridges along NH-27. Seeks to modernize pedestrian safety and traffic flow.
NHAI excels in executing large-scale infrastructure in demanding geographies. It has pioneered rapid construction practices (e.g., 75 km built in 5 days for a Guinness World Record). It champions sustainability through its Green Highways Policy, supporting environmental and social stewardship.
